Emergent Properties

Emergent properties can be classified into two distinct categories: weak and strong emergent properties.

Weak Emergent Properties: These properties cannot be predicted by examining the fundamental properties of individual components, but they emerge from the collective interactions of those components. For example, the boiling and freezing points of water do not arise from the properties of a single water molecule. Instead, they emerge from the behavior of many molecules interacting through forces like hydrogen bonding. While initially not obvious, these properties become clear when examining the collective dynamics of the system.
Strong Emergent Properties: In contrast, strong emergent properties are irreducible and defy prediction or explanation, even when the individual components and their interactions are well understood. These properties give rise to new and unforeseen characteristics. One prominent example is consciousness. Despite significant advances in neuroscience, the mechanisms by which subjective experience arises from neuronal activity remain elusive. Some argue that we may never fully comprehend this phenomenon, as it may always resist reduction to its basic components.

Game of Life

In 1970, British mathematician John Horton Conway introduced the “Game of Life” (Berlekamp, Conway, & Guy, 1982). This is not a traditional game in the usual sense but rather a mathematical model that involves setting initial conditions and observing how patterns evolve over time. The rules of the Game of Life are remarkably simple. The game unfolds on a two-dimensional grid made up of square cells, each of which can be either alive or dead. While the grid is theoretically infinite, players can use smaller grids to explore less complex patterns. The Game of Life operates according to four basic rules:

Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbors dies, as if by underpopulation.
Any live cell with two or three live neighbors survives to the next generation.
Any live cell with more than three live neighbors dies, as if by overpopulation.
Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbors becomes alive, as if by reproduction.

In the illustrations below, I will use gray to represent a live cell and white to represent a dead cell.

Let’s consider a simple scenario in the Game of Life where the initial setup consists of three live cells arranged in a row (Figure 1a). In this configuration, the leftmost cell, having only one neighbor, will die in the next iteration. The same fate awaits the rightmost cell. However, the center cell, with two neighbors, will survive. The two dead cells positioned above and below the center cell each have three live neighbors, causing them to come to life in the next iteration (Figure 1b). As a result, the horizontal three-cell pattern transforms into a vertical three-cell pattern. By applying the same rules, the next iteration will revert the pattern to its original horizontal arrangement (Figure 1c). This process creates an oscillator, also known as a blinker, which alternates between two distinct states. Though the game’s rules do not explicitly mention oscillators, their behavior becomes clear once you see it in action.

In the Game of Life, most complex structures either evolve into stable patterns, fade away, oscillate, or continue to change. However, some patterns exhibit a unique behavior: they repeat themselves after a set number of iterations and move across the grid. I refer to these patterns as “gliders.” The illustration below shows a glider that repeats itself every four iterations and moves diagonally by one cell towards the bottom right.

Furthermore, the Game of Life can generate structures that not only create new complex patterns but also propel these patterns in a fixed direction. This pattern repeats itself and generates a “glider” every 30 iterations.

The video highlights some intriguing things you can do with the Game of Life. The system appears almost alive, and some patterns are so intricate that predicting the new property from the game’s rules becomes challenging. In other words, we observe a strong emergent property. It’s even been demonstrated that the Game of Life can function as a universal tuning machine, capable of being programmed to perform any computing task—just like modern computers.

Conway’s Game of Life revealed how simple rules can give rise to complex emergent properties that are not immediately obvious or easily predicted when interacting within a system. The apparent simplicity of the Game of Life’s rules belies the richness of patterns and behaviors that emerge, showcasing the fascinating nature of complexity that arises from simplicity in both computational and natural systems. Understanding emergent properties and complex adaptive systems is crucial for comprehending how God interacts with the world.

Many have used the Game of Life to explore artificial life and evolution. This leads to a compelling question: Did God use emergent properties to create human beings? Could He be a super programmer of the Game of Life?
